עָרוּם ʻârûwm · H6175 · astute, clever, crafty
Hebrew עָרוּם (ʻârûwm, H6175) denotes cunning or shrewdness with neutral-to-negative moral valence (used of the serpent in Gen 3:1, but also of wise prudence in Proverbs), while Greek πανοῦργος (panoûrgos, G3835) carries similar semantic range of cleverness/adroitness that can shade either positively (skillful) or negatively (crafty/unscrupulous) depending on context; the LXX regularly renders עָרוּם with πανοῦργος where cunning or shrewdness is in view.

πανοῦργος describes a person characterized by cunning and deceit, as Paul ironically concedes the charge brought against him: “But be that as it may, I did not burden you myself; nevertheless, devious person that I am, I took you in by deceit.” (2 Corinthians 12:16)
