Meanings

  1. shadow or shade

A dark area or shape produced by an object coming between the sun's rays and a surface, which provides shelter and respite from the sun's heat and can measure time, associated with safety and protection but also with things that are fleeting and will vanish in time

    Examples

Judges 9:15 “And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If you really are anointing me as king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, may fire come out of the bramble and consume the cedars of Lebanon.’

Judges 9:36 When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” But Zebul said to him, “You are seeing the shadow of the mountains as if they were people.”

2 Kings 20:9 Isaiah said, “This shall be the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will perform the word that He has spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten steps or go back ten steps?”

  2. shadow, shelter, protection

Literally: shadow; hence: state in which humans are safe from danger, in the same way as as shaded place provides safety from the heat of the sun

    Examples

Genesis 19:8 “Now look, I have two daughters who have not had relations with any man; please let me bring them out to you, and do to them whatever you like; only do not do anything to these men, because they have come under the shelter of my roof.”

Ecclesiastes 7:12 For wisdom is protection just as money is protection, But the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom keeps its possessors alive.

Isaiah 30:2 Who proceed down to Egypt Without consulting Me, To take refuge in the safety of Pharaoh, And to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!
