μισθόω misthóō · G3409 · to hire
Greek μισθόω specifically denotes hiring out for wages or (in middle voice) hiring/renting, serving as the direct Septuagint rendering of Hebrew שָׂכַר's core sense of wage-based employment transactions.
Semantic domains 1 entry
Hire002003002014
The verb for hiring or earning wages, directly shown in Leah's claim to have "hired" Jacob with her son's mandrakes (Genesis 30:16), Abimelech "hir[ing] worthless and reckless men" (Judges 9:4), the Danites who "hired" the young Levite as priest (Judges 18:4), and the once-full who now "hire themselves out for bread" (1 Samuel 2:5); the sampled citation at Deuteronomy 23:5 does not itself show this sense, describing instead the LORD's refusal to heed Balaam.
