Meanings

  1. to circumcise, circumcision

Action by which someone removes the foreskin of the penis, + preferably with a flint knife, as a sign of the covenant between YHWH and Abraham's descendants; considered an outward change for the good that should be accompanied by an inward change in attitude as well

    Examples

Genesis 17:10 “This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised.

Genesis 17:11 “And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you.

Genesis 17:12 “And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, including a slave who is born in the house or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your descendants.

  2. Literally: to remove the foreskin of the heart; hence: action by which someone changes his/her attitude towards YHWH, as if by removing something that covers the heart like a foreskin, and so become willing to obey the terms of the covenant and serve YHWH wholeheartedly (to circumcise (one's heart) > to (re)commit oneself (to following God))

    Examples

Deuteronomy 10:16 “So circumcise your heart, and do not stiffen your neck any longer.

Deuteronomy 30:6 “Moreover, the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul, so that you may live.

Jeremiah 4:4 “Circumcise yourselves to the LORD And remove the foreskins of your hearts, Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, Or else My wrath will spread like fire And burn with no one to quench it, Because of the evil of your deeds.”

  3. to cause to be circumcised

Exact meaning unknown; probably: to kill an uncircumcised enemy, and remove his foreskin as proof

    Examples

Psalm 118:10 All nations surrounded me; In the name of the LORD I will certainly fend them off.

Psalm 118:11 They surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me; In the name of the LORD I will certainly fend them off.

Psalm 118:12 They surrounded me like bees; They were extinguished like a fire of thorn bushes; In the name of the LORD I will certainly fend them off.
