古時，城市通常建有特殊的防禦工事來保護居民不受外敵的攻擊。有些防禦工事憑依天然，例如陡峭的山頂或河邊。人工修建的防禦工事至少包括一堵又高又厚的牆，通常是用磚或石頭砌成的。城牆有一個或多個入口，用大門關閉。大門通常是木製的。入口的結構往往相當複雜，包含一個或多個轉彎通道和幾個警衛室。城門和城牆的其餘部分可能還建有高過城牆的塔樓。這些塔樓既有利於觀察從遠處靠近的人，也是向敵人投射槍矛弓箭的制高點。
