참새
성경의 동물
이스라엘에는 흔한 참새가 세 종류 있다. 집참새(Passer domesticus), 스페인참새(Passer hispaniolensis), 사해참새(Passer moabiticus)이다. 셋 모두 얼룩덜룩한 갈색의 작은 새이다. 마을과 정착지 주변에 많은 다른 작은 새로는 멧새과, 되새과, 박새과의 새들이 있다. 특히 참새는 대개 꽤 큰 무리를 지어 함께 쉬고 둥지를 튼다. 모두 씨앗을 먹으며, 주로 풀씨와 곡식을 먹고 산다.

헬라어 strouthion은 분명히 참새의 이름이지만, 히브리어 tsippor는 실제로 참새만 한 새를 통틀어 가리키는 포괄적인 말이다. 이런 작은 새, 특히 참새는 그물과 덫으로 잡았으며, 가난한 사람들의 식생활에서 중요한 부분이었다.
