象征意义

希伯来文tsippor 一词通常是指麻雀大小的小型鸟类，而‘ayit 在指鸟类而非动物时，泛指鸷鸟或大型食肉鸟类。在新约中，希腊文orneon 一词指的是鸷鸟，但在次经书卷中，这个词泛指鸟类。在《次经•马加比传》（《思》《玛加伯传》），表示鸷鸟的词是oiōnobrōtos。上述清单中的其他希伯来文和希腊文词语都泛指鸟类，如果鸟的大小或种类很重要，则通过具体的上下文来指明具体种类。拉丁文volatilis 也是所有鸟类的统称。
