Meanings

  1. to be well-fed

Literally: to be fat; hence: state in which humans or animals look healthy and strong as a result of an abundance of food; it is important to note that fatness is usually regarded as a good quality in the OT, even though the causes and consequences are not necessarily considered positive; sometimes, however, fatness is associated with dullness and unresponsiveness

    Examples

Deuteronomy 32:15 “But Jeshurun became fat and kicked— You have become fat, thick, and obstinate— Then he abandoned God who made him, And rejected the Rock of his salvation.

Nehemiah 9:25 “They captured fortified cities and a fertile land. They took possession of houses full of every good thing, Carved out cisterns, vineyards, olive groves, Fruit trees in abundance. So they ate, were filled and put on fat, And lived luxuriously in Your great goodness.

Jeremiah 5:28 ‘They are fat, they are sleek, They also excel in deeds of wickedness; They do not plead the cause, The cause of the orphan, so that they may be successful; And they do not defend the rights of the poor.

  2. Literally: to cause (someone else's) heart to be fat; hence: causative action by which humans cause the mind of other humans to be dull and unresponsive (to make (someone's) heart fat > to make (someone's) mind dull and unresponsive)

    Examples

Isaiah 6:10 “Make the hearts of this people insensitive, Their ears dull, And their eyes blind, So that they will not see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their hearts, And return and be healed.”
