house dog, little dog
Relatively small light brown domestic animal, feeding on anything from household refuse to animal carcasses and excreta; Canis familiaris putiatini; associated with all sorts of uncleanness, aggression, greediness, low status (diminutive of κύων dog, but in the NT the diminutive force may have become lost, though a component of emotive attachment or affection is no doubt retained and thus the reference is presumably to a house dog)
ExamplesMatthew 15:26 Yet He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
Matthew 15:27 And she said, “Yes, Lord; but please help, for even the dogs feed on the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”
Mark 7:27 And He was saying to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
