먹

먹은 글을 쓰거나 표시하는 데 쓰던 검은 액체였다. 중동의 건조한 환경에서는 액체를 오래 보관하기 어려웠으므로 먹은 검은 숯의 탄소로 만들기도 했다. 이것을 고무나 기름과 섞은 다음 말렸다. 서기관은 글을 쓸 준비가 되면 붓끝을 물에 적신 다음 먹 덩어리에 문질렀다. 물이 탄소를 조금 녹여 먹물이 되었다.
