Word Study

In the Bible, “Ebenezer” is used three times, twice to refer to a city (, ). records, “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the LORD has helped us.’” Ebenezer comes from the Hebrew phrase Eben ha-Ezer, meaning “stone of help.”

In the hymn “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” the second verse begins, “Here I raise my Ebenezer.” Raising Ebenezer is a way of thanking God for the grace and mercy He has bestowed upon us.

The Bible was not systematically divided into chapters until the early 13th century, circa 1227. The first Bible to use both chapters and verses was the Geneva Bible published in 1560, 51 years before the King James translation.
