    다리가 여섯 개이고 날개가 있는 곤충으로, 세 번째 다리 한 쌍이 길어져 뛰기에 알맞게 된 것이 특징이다; 메뚜기과(Acrididae); 떼를 지어 새로운 지역으로 이동하여 그곳에 자리 잡는다; 다른 때에는 홀로 또는 작은 무리로 산다; 볶거나 굽거나 튀기거나 불에 직접 구워 익혀 먹으며, 어떤 곳에서는 날것으로 먹기도 한다; 수가 많고 떼를 짓는 특성 때문에 메뚜기는 막아 낼 수 없이 공격해 오는 거대한 군대의 상징이자 신적 형벌의 상징이었다

(ίδος, ἡ (from Homer down), a locust, particularly that species which especially infests oriental countries, stripping fields and trees. Numberless swarms of them almost every spring are carried by the wind from Arabia into Palestine, and having devastated that country migrate to regions farther north, until they perish by falling into the sea. The Orientals are accustomed to feed upon locusts, either raw or roasted and seasoned with salt (or prepared in other ways), and the Israelites also (according to Lev 11:22) were permitted to eat them; (cf. Winers RWB under the word Heuschrecken; Furrer in Schenkel iii., p. 78f; (BB. DD., under the word; Tristram, Nat. Hist. of the Bible, p. 313ff)): Mt 3:4; Mk 1:6. A marvelous and infernal kind of locusts is described in Rev 9:3, Rev 9:7, cf. Rev 9:2, Rev 9:5f, 8-12; see Dusterdieck at the passage.
