낫은 익은 곡식을 베는 데 쓰던 크고 굽은 칼이다. 나무로 된 짧은 손잡이(15-20센티미터, 6-8인치)가 달려 있었다.

이 연장은 땅 가까이에서 원을 그리듯 휘둘러 풀이나 곡식을 베었다. 낫으로 땅 가까이를 베려면 허리를 굽혀야 했지만, 손잡이가 더 긴 큰 낫은 일꾼이 똑바로 선 채 일할 수 있게 해 주었다(낫(병거의 무기)도 보라).
