牛虻，也称为马蝇和水蝇，有许多种类，属于会叮咬的蝇类，以恒温动物或人类的血液为食。有些种类会传播疾病。圣经中提到的牛虻很可能是普通马蝇（学名Stomoxys calcitrans），在中东、西亚，澳大利亚和非洲很常见。这种马蝇非常执着，除非被刷掉或打掉，否则绝对不离开宿主。它们迅速地叮咬，然后被叮者只会发痒一会儿。
